Medicare Related Programs
Created by Federal law in 1966, Medicare became the backbone of health insurance for people over age 65. It also includes those under age 65 who have received Social Security Disability for at least 24 months, and those
with chronic kidney failure, on dialysis.
In recent years, rising costs forced the Federal government to reduce many benefits, and that gave rise to the era of Supplemental Plans, then Medicare HMOs, and in 2003, with the passage of the Medicare Modernization Act,
and the addition of a Prescription Drug Plan, Medicare
were introduced.
